Goolengook, a GIS case study
By Tony Hastings 5/11/04

GIS Map of Goolengook
The dark green areas contain the oldest, hollow-bearing habitat trees. While spotlighting along Old Goolengook road, a bizzarre, schreeching call was heard from one of these trees. We marked the site with he GPS and returned the next day to investigate.
Owl in a tree hollow
The picture above shows an owl sitting in the tree-hollow. That night, we spotlight the hollow, saw the owl's eye-shine, and later saw it fly overhead.
The significance of the find is that it confirms the very tiny, renant stands of oldest trees, seen as dark green on the map above, do contain critical habitat for the owls. These old-growth stands must be protected for the threatened species survival.
